Song 94: The top 1000 songs, a challenge

You’re Going to Lose That Girl” by the Beatles

When I was 9-years old, I became a super-fan of Rock’n’Roll. I was living in Fort Worth, Texas and I had this poster from radio station KFJZ of the top 1000 songs of the rock era. I made it my business to hear and know each one of those thousand songs – this was in 1969, so it was a difficult task. You’d have to wait until someone, like DJ Mark E. Baby, played them on the radio. I would mark each one off as I heard them. That was also the year I fell head over heels in love with the Beatles who of course, to my eternal sorrow, would shortly breakup.

I saw the Beatles movie “Help!” and the lead Beatle in that movie was Ringo Starr. He was the most lovable, the most natural comic actor – the one the plot revolved around. In the movie, my favorite song was “You’re Going to Lose That Girl”. There’s Ringo behind his drum kit, cool as you please, the smoke from his cigarette lending atmosphere to the scene in a recording studio. At the end of the song, the villains had sawed through the floor around him, and he and his kit disappear down the hole. What an exit!

So there I was, a little pre-teen Asian girl in the Midwest of America in the early 1970s and the absolutely improbable, overriding ambition in my life was to play drums in a rock’n’roll band.

TOMORROW...another fab foursome
