“Girls Like You” by The Naked and Famous
Lawrence: This is a great breakup song from one of my favorite bands. It’s not your typical depressing, wallowing in misery breakup song, but rather empowering and defiant. It makes me think about the girlfriends that did me wrong. The selfish ones that only thought about themselves. Their perfectly charmed lives. This song sticks it to them. It lends a voice to me to say the things I never did. A commentary on how shallow they were and their failure to aspire be better. What happens when their pretty facade disappears and life become a challenge, what then? They are the perfect subject for a song, forever immortalized as a someone lacking depth, girls like you. It’s more inspiring than sad. A feel good breakup song. If you ever need affirmation after breaking up, this is the song to put on…real loud. The last time I saw The Naked and Famous was at the Fox Theater in Oakland in November 2016. They’re planning a stripped down tour this spring and you can bet “Girls Like You” is on the setlist. One of my favorite bands going acoustic, I’ve died and gone to heaven. I already have my tickets.
[Note: By the time we did this interview, Lawrence had seen TNAF, referenced in the first post]
5songpjct: The name of that album really sets up that dynamic doesn’t it? Passive me, Aggressive You. I definitely remember those relationships. [Note: I will go in detail for my 4th pick in my five songs] When I first heard that song, I actually thought it was Passively Aggressive You, which would have also worked for me at that time.
Lawrence: Haha, yeah, I can see why people would think that. When people hear music, they tend to apply it to their own lives.
COMING UP TOMORROW…we talk more about breakups
