Song 51: Nice, France, 2001

Why does it always rain on me?” by Travis

Written by Teresa

It was senior year of High School and I was in Europe with my French club over the winter holiday. Only a few days before, I had celebrated my 18th birthday at a fancy restaurant on the Seine in Paris. Musically, this trip was saturated with Jeff Buckley listened to on a mixed tape my friend had made me, but then, after a day touring around Nice, France, our group walked into a random square and a live band was playing American (and other English language) music and we couldn’t help dancing. For some reason, in this moment, even though it’s not the happiest song, it made me feel alive and like the world was so vast and tiny at the same time – I think because I didn’t expect to hear this music in a town in France, especially from such an obscure band (one that I’d only heard on another mixed tape from the same friend!). I know now, that they are a Scottish band who was very popular at the time in Europe (even being named Best Band at the 2000 BRIT Awards with The Man Who as Best Album), but my world was much smaller then so it seemed significant to me.
