Song 41: Flying through the air with freak folk accompaniment

Book of Right On” by Joanna Newsom

Christine: I will never understand why I love this song so much, I just do! Several of my friends were in a band named after the song, which is how I first heard of it. It’s such a weird song, the harp, her voice, which sounds like elderly child, the whole thing is just odd. But I love it. I choreographed an aerial silks performance to this song because to me, it captured my childhood growing up in the woods. I joke that my character is a feral child, but listening to this song it seems more accurate than not!

5songpjct: How did you get involved with silks?

Christine: For most of my life, I was an endurance athlete, and teaching physical education made me realize that I wasn’t really that strong. I wanted to do something that challenged my strength, and I certainly found it! It’s been a transformative choice, not only am I much stronger than I was when I started, I’ve found a wonderful community of people and great friends in the process.

NEXT song with Christine is a song from a cartoon band. Don’t forget the question of the week which will go live on Facebook at 2:00 p.m. PST.
