“Don’t Dream It’s Over” – Crowded House
5songpjct: How did you discover Pinegrove?
Mickey: When I was driving through the Upper Peninsula (Michigan) with a buddy. He introduced them to me and for guys in their now forties who loved emo and punk of the late 90s or so, Pinegrove feels like they are reinvigorating that genre. I was surprised how emo they were. They seem a bit young for that sound to influence their music, the can’t be more that 25.
Pinegrove is a newish, young band that seems to have expertly integrated early 2000s emo with folky, bluegrass inspired instrumentation. I’d love a little more pop earnestness mixed in with their repertoire, and what better way than to cover a song likely written before most of the band was born?
It excites me that genres I loved as a teenager are coming back again. I just heard a band today that is doing the same thing, they are out of Chicago and called Ratboys. They sound like a folk Sunny Day Real Estate with this awesome female singer and they are great. It is exciting to hear young acts, maybe because I am old, that take the sound of my youth and reinvigorates it. I guess this is the theme of my picks anyway.
