Song 31: Mostly no and sometimes yes

Names: Nicole J + Sammy

Relationship: Married

Together: 20 years

Song:I Still Believe” by Frank Turner

5songpjct: Do you and your husband have the same taste in music?

Nicole: No. There is a some overlap but mainly no.

5songpjct: What are some bands that you both like?

Nicole: He is a huge Frank Turner fan. And then over time I became a fan, too. We like Jeremy Messersmith and Mason Jennings and others who we’ve seen live. I think live performances can make or break your impression of an artist.

Our default in the car is classic rock because we can’t agree on another genre with consistency and this is pretty safe. He will go from punk rock to folk to old school country music. But he likes 90s-00s rap, too, so he is really jumping all over the board. I will listen to all of that but rarely does he like the alt-indie-synth-pop that I listen to.

5songpjct: I don’t think I have ever heard Frank Turner.

Nicole: He started out as a British punk-rocker, but is now more of a rock singer-songwriter. We went to see him at the Varsity a couple years ago. I was used to hearing the same songs over and over again that my husband really liked, because he has the tendency to listen to the same song over and over again (“I Still Believe”) and sing it over and over again, much to the dismay of our family. And then I went to the show and had the opportunity to hear new songs of his that I hadn’t heard as many times, that I liked. He’s a great live performer.

5songpjct: What is one band you totally disagree on?

Nicole: That is tough. I can’t pinpoint an individual band, but I have to say that, as a genre, Country is hard for me to get into. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily his favorite either but then a random song will be on the radio that I’ve never heard and he’ll know every word. He seems to be going through this classic Country renaissance, which isn’t my favorite, but I am trying to come around.

ALSO different for this week….the question of the week will be on the blog.
