Song 14: Covers done well

Love is the Drug” by Grace Jones.

5songpjct: Let’s talk about Grace Jones’ cover of “Love is the Drug.”

I discovered Grace Jones because I was a huge James Bond fan in high school. There was a marathon on TNT one day, the 007 days of Christmas, or whatever. I had decided to watch A View to a Kill because I am also a Christopher Walken fan. This movie is how I was introduced to Grace Jones. I started doing some research on her and I found about her music career. She’s amazing, by the way. I found her song for Demolition Man first.

There is something so beautiful about her voice. What I love about her is that she could walk the line between masculine and feminine, like Annie Lennox. She also has this voice that comes out of her. It is like power.

Years later I watched this terrible movie Sucker Punch. It’s TERRIBLE. Oscar Isaac sang “Love is the Drug” with Carla Gugino and her bad Russian accent. I loved the song and Oscar Isaac was great. I looked for the song online and I rediscovered Grace’s version.

I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t get to see her at FYF last year. I heard she was the best thing about that weekend.

5songpjct: I heard she hula-hooped throughout the entire set.

Kelley: Did you know her son is the drummer in her band? He gets asked about how he feels about his mom doing certain things on stage and his reply is, “who am I to say, she is my mother.” I love that.

OUR last song with Kelley tomorrow. That week went fast.
