Name: Kelley Baumgartner
Place: Santa Monica, California
Your relationship to music: Listener and casual guitar player
Industry: Hair Colorist/Stylist in Santa Monica…@kelleybaumgartnerhair on Instagram
When I met Kelley it was at a time when I was meeting 50 other people at a networking dinner. I have to say that Kelley stood out. She reminded me of someone I wanted to be friends with in high school. I first started seeing her because she is an amazing hairstylist. You should check out her vivid work on her instagram. (Linked above) Since then she has become a really great friend and supportive ear outside of the salon. She listened when I needed someone to bounce ideas off of when I was brainstorming this project.
5songprjct: I have always wondered this, do you select the music you listen to in your salon based on who is sitting in the chair?
Kelley: I had never really thought about until you asked me that question. I usually take into account people’s music taste as best as I can. Sometimes I am in a mood and need some particular music in my day. I NEVER play “club music” and I try to be considerate of people and keep any offensive language out of it. If I am just meeting a client for the first time I usually play some 60s/70s California rock like the Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, etc., until I can really get a feel for my client. I have had clients ask me to send them playlists of what we listened to during their appointment.
5songprjct: What was the hardest thing about choosing music for this project?
Kelley: Coming up with a list that was interesting and not just the standard top five favorite list of songs.
5songpjct: If you had to describe the theme of the songs coming up this week using a few words, what would they be?
Kelley: Five songs that I was introduced to as an adult and still have no idea how I didn’t know about them before. These are the kind of songs that you know about, you’ve heard them around, but I really didn’t get an appreciation for them until either someone else introduced them to me or I rediscovered them in a completely different circumstance.
Your assignment for Sunday, January 14, 2018:
