Assignment 11: Time and place

Name: Teresa

Location: Los Angeles, California

Relationship to music: listener

Industry: cultural heritage preservation & access

Sometimes what you like is a very personal thing. I will just let Teresa take it away this week.

When Kristen asked me to be a part of this project, my first instinct was to decline. Anyone who knows me well, knows that much of my music listening is solitary and I can be a bit private and neurotic about it. While I love going to concerts with friends once I know we like the same band, I have a very hard time with the seemingly innocuous small talk question “What kind of music do you like?” and on car rides with friends, even short ones, I usually defer to the radio or ask my carmate to choose instead of selecting music myself. I get very connected to most of my music and there’s something intimate about putting it out there for someone else. In most circumstances, the possibility of rejection just isn’t worth the possibility of connection. As if the experience of a friend disliking my musical tastes will affect my ability to enjoy that music in the future. See, I said it was neurotic!

I also, in general, do not have favorites, so I knew this had to be a different kind of list. Finally, for the music I listen to the most, I tend to enjoy full albums and not favor individual songs. But I took a stab at picking five songs that remind me of a specific time or place in my life. I hope you enjoy (and if you don’t please don’t tell me so! Winky face).
